“All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.”
― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring
As we roll toward Leap Day, I find this to be the perfect time to consider these words from Tolkien. Winter is my season to reflect and be curious about my direction and purpose. Am I building strength to withstand the challenges that will come? Have I taken the time to be grateful for what I have?
Take Time to Reflect
Time is the enemy of reflection. While there is never enough time, I have good news for you. Since 2024 is a Leap Year, you have a whole extra day to employ. I encourage you to clear your calendar and use this gift of time to be curious. While there are hundreds of ways to practice curiosity, here are three of my favorites:
- Sit down in part of your living space. Look at the pictures on your walls and the artifacts on display. How does this represent your journey? What’s missing? Take a photo to remember your space.
- Jot down your thoughts about a situation you have been avoiding. You don’t have to make sense. Just brainstorm and let your mind wander. Feel free to doodle to connect ideas.
- Visit a local café or restaurant. Order something you really enjoy and eat it slowly. What are you reminded of as you savor each bite? Take notice of what you hear, smell, and feel.
Take advantage of this year’s Leap Day to wander and explore a bit. Engage all your senses. I can’t predict what you will find. I doubt it will be gold, but I bet you will be rewarded with more soil to develop deeper roots.
Relish the journey. Happy February!
Good to read your thoughts again. I have missed them AND our chats.
I agree with Ed Good to read your thoughts. This one is making me think and refocus on taking time to just smell thee rose to coin a phrase.
